課題

Little Nancy's Pet

Little Nancy was in the garden filling in a hole when her neighbor peered over the fence. Interested in what the little girl was up to, he politely asked, "What are you up to there, Nancy?"
"My goldfish died," replied Nancy tearfully, without looking up, "and I've just buried him."

The neighbor was concerned, "That's an awfully big hole for a goldfish, isn't it?"

Nancy patted down the last heap of earth and then replied, "That's because he's inside your stupid cat."

庭で穴を埋めていたナンシー。フェンス越しにそれをのぞいていた隣のおじさんが、あの子は一体何をしてるんだろうと不思議に思い、優しく声をかけた。「ナンシー、そこで何をしてるのかな？」
「あたしの金魚が死んじゃったの」。ナンシーは顔も上げずに泣いている。「だからいまお墓に埋めてあげたの」

奇妙に思った隣のおじさん。「金魚のお墓にしちゃ、ずいぶんと大きな穴だねえ」

ナンシーは最後に盛った土を手で軽くおさえてからこう答えた。「おじさんちのバカネコのお腹にいるからよ」
