課題

Little Nancy's Pet

Little Nancy was in the garden filling in a hole when her neighbor peered over the fence. Interested in what the little girl was up to, he politely asked, "What are you up to there, Nancy?"
"My goldfish died," replied Nancy tearfully, without looking up, "and I've just buried him."

The neighbor was concerned, "That's an awfully big hole for a goldfish, isn't it?"

Nancy patted down the last heap of earth and then replied, "That's because he's inside your stupid cat."

　ナンシーちゃんが庭で穴を埋めていると、近所の人がへい越しにのぞき込んだ。女の子が何をしているのか気になって、その男性はていねいに尋ねた。「ナンシーちゃん、そこで何をしているのかな？」
「私の金魚が死んじゃったの。だから今うめたところ」ナンシーは涙声で、顔も上げずに答えた。
　近所の人は不審に思って言った。「金魚にしてはずいぶん大きな穴だねえ」
　ナンシーは、最後に盛った土をパンパンと手で固めてからこう返した。「金魚はおじちゃんのわるいねこの中だからよ」
