課題

Little Nancy's Pet

Little Nancy was in the garden filling in a hole when her neighbor peered over the fence. Interested in what the little girl was up to, he politely asked, "What are you up to there, Nancy?"
"My goldfish died," replied Nancy tearfully, without looking up, "and I've just buried him."

The neighbor was concerned, "That's an awfully big hole for a goldfish, isn't it?"

Nancy patted down the last heap of earth and then replied, "That's because he's inside your stupid cat."

　幼いナンシーが庭で穴に土を戻していると、隣の家の人が塀越しにのぞきこんだ。ナンシーが何をしているのか興味を持った彼は、やさしく尋ねた。「そこで何してるんだい、ナンシー?」
「金魚が死んじゃったの。」ナンシーは顔も上げずに、涙声で答えた。「お墓に入れてあげたところ。」
　彼は首をかしげた。「金魚一匹にはずいぶんと穴が大きくないかい？」
　ナンシーは、穴を埋め終わると、仕上げにぽんぽんとたたいた。「だって金魚ちゃんは、おじさんちのバカ猫のお腹の中なんだもの。」
