夏の怪談翻訳コンテスト

課題

A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”

真っ暗闇の夜、仕事帰りの若い女性が歩いていた。その日は工事のせいで、薄暗い墓地の中を通らなくてはいけなかった。墓地の入り口に近づくにつれ恐ろしさが膨れ上がり、女性は震え出した。すると突然、警察官が向こうから歩いてくるのが見えた。女性は駆け寄り、家まで一緒に歩いてくれないかとたずねた。警察官が承諾したので二人で墓地を歩いていたが、女性はやはり震え出してしまった。
「なぜ震えているのです？」警察官は尋ねた。
「恐ろしくて」女性は答えた。「本当に、幽霊がダメなんです」
警察官は驚き、そして笑いながら言った。「どうして私たちを怖がるのです？」
