夏の怪談翻訳コンテスト

課題

A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”

ある暗い夜のこと、若い女性が一人、仕事を終えて家に向かって歩いていました。道路が工事中だったので、女性は真っ暗な墓地の中の道を通らなければなりませんでした。墓地の入り口が近づくにつれて、女性は恐怖に襲われてガクガクと震えだしました。不意に警官が道なりに歩いてくるのが見えます。女性は警官に走り寄り、家まで送ってくれるよう頼みました。警官が承諾し二人で墓地の中を通っていると、女性は小刻みに震えだしました。
「どうして震えているの？」と警官。
「本当に嫌だわ」と女性は答えます。「死んだ人が怖くてたまらないの。」
警官は驚いて、笑いながら聞きました。「なんで僕たちが怖いのさ？」
