夏の怪談翻訳コンテスト

課題

A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”

真っ暗な夜道を若い女性が一人、仕事帰りの家路についていた。
道路が工事中だったために、彼女は陰気な墓場の中にある小道を通るしかなかった。
墓地の入り口に近づくにつれ、恐怖に打ちのめされ、身震いまで始める女性。
不意に、彼女は一人の警官が道を歩いているのを見かけた。
彼女は警官の方に駆け寄り、家まで付き添って欲しいとお願いした。
彼は承諾した。二人が墓場を通り過ぎた時、彼女はまた震え出した。
「なぜ君は震えているんだい？」警官が問う。
「怖い…」女性は答える。「私、死人がものすごく怖いんです。」
警官は驚き、それから笑いながら尋ねた。「どうして僕らが怖いんだい？」
