課題

A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”



訳文

仕事帰りの1人の若い女性が、暗い夜道を歩いていた。道路工事のため、暗い墓地を通り抜けて回り道しなければいけなかった。墓地の入り口に近づくと、恐怖が襲ってきて震えだした。不意に、彼女は道を歩いている警察官を見つけた。彼女が駆け寄り、家まで送ってほしいとお願いすると、警察官は承諾した。警察官と一緒に墓地の中を歩き始めると、彼女は小刻みに震え始めた。
「どうして震えてるんだい?」と警察官が尋ねた。
「恐ろしいんです。」と彼女は答えた。「幽霊とかお化けがものすごく怖くて。」
それを聞いて驚いた警察官は、笑いながらこう尋ねた。「どうして俺たちが怖いんだい?」
