夏の怪談翻訳コンテスト

課題

A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”

　仕事帰りの若い女が一人、暗い夜道を自宅へと歩いていた。道路工事のため、墓地の暗がりを抜けていく道をとるしかなかった。女は墓地の入口まで来たが、あまりの怖さに震え出した。そのとき一人の警官が歩いてくるが見えた。女は駆け寄り自宅まで送って欲しいと頼んだ。警官はうなずくと一緒に墓地を通り抜けたが、女はまた震え出した。
「どうして震えているのですか？」警官は尋ねた。
「だって怖くて」と女は答えた。「死人って本当に怖いわ」
　警官は驚いた顔を見せると、笑いながら言った。「ぼくらのどこが怖いのさ」
