課題
A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”
訳文
ある闇深い夜、仕事を終えた若い女が自宅へ向かいひとり歩いていた。途中、道路工事による迂回で真っ暗な墓地を通り抜けることになった。女は墓地の入り口に向かったが、近づくにつれて恐怖に襲われ、震え始めた。ちょうどその時、一人の警官が道を歩いているのが見えた。女は警官のもとに走り寄り、自宅まで送ってもらえるよう頼んだ。警官が頼みを引き受けたので、ふたりは一緒に墓地の中を歩いて行った。すると、女はまた震えだした。
それを見た警官は尋ねた。
「なぜ震えているのですか」
「気味が悪いんですもの。私、死人ってものが本当に怖くて仕方ないんです」
警官は驚いた顔をした。
それから笑って聞いた。
「私たちの何が怖いっていうのですか」
