A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”
訳文
ある暗い夜、仕事を終えた一人の若い女性が歩いて家に帰っていた時のことです。
道路工事が行われていたせいで、彼女は真っ暗な墓地を通らないといけませんでした。墓地の門が近づいてくると、彼女は怖くて怖くて震えが止まらなくなりました。
ふと気がつくと、ひとりの警察官が道を歩いています。彼女は彼のもとに駆け寄り、家まで送ってほしいと頼みました。彼は頷き、ふたりで墓地を通り抜けました。すると、彼女の身体はまた震え出しました。
「どうして震えているんですか？」警察官が尋ねました。
「だって、怖いんですもの…」
「私、死者がほんとうに怖いんです」
彼女がこう答えると、警察官は驚き、それから笑って言いました。
「どうして僕たちを怖がるんです？」
