夏の怪談翻訳コンテスト

課題

A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”

若い女が仕事帰り、暗い夜道を歩いていた。道路工事のため、女は暗くなった墓地を通り抜けざるを得なかった。墓地の入り口に近づくと、女は恐怖のあまり身震いし始めた。
ふと、1人の警官が通りを歩いているのが目に入った。女が駆け寄り、家まで送ってほしいと頼むと、警官は同意した。墓地の中を歩いていると女はぶるぶると震えだした。
「なぜ震えているのですか」と、警官がたずねると女は、
「ぞっとするわ。私死人がとても怖いんです」と答えた。すると警官はきょとんとし、そして笑いながら言った。「どうして我々を恐れるのですか。」
