A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”
訳文
ある若い女性が、仕事を終えて闇夜の中を家路についておりました。いつもの道が工事中なので、暗い墓地を通り抜けるしかありません。墓地の入り口に近づくと、女性はすっかり怖くなり震え出してしまいました。するとその時、道を歩いているお巡りさんが見えたのです。女性は駆け寄り、家まで送ってくれるよう頼みました。お巡りさんは頼みを聞きましたが、２人が墓地に入ると女性はぶるぶると震えています。
お巡りさんは聞きました。「なぜ震えているのかな？」
女性は答えました。「恐ろしいからです。私は本当に幽霊が怖いのです」
お巡りさんは驚いた様子で笑いながら言いました。「我々のどこがそんなに怖いんだ？」
