The three friends had been looking forward to camping together in the Lonely Mountains for many days. Every year they would spend a long weekend together under the stars. The best part of their time together was trying to scare each other with spooky campfire stories.
Fox : OK, can I go? I have a great story to share this year. You will wet yourself with fear!
Ferret : Ha ha. That sounds better than last year’s story about the clumsy graveyard ghosts.
Rabbit: Yeah, I’m looking forward to having a good laugh. Every year you hope to scare us badly – let’s see if you can do it this time.
Fox : Great. So there were these three kids that were hiking in the woods around here...
訳文
キツネくんとフェレットくんとウサギくんは 大のなかよしで、みんなで 山奥にでかけて、何日間か キャンプをするのを たのしみにしてきました。まいとし、ほしぞらのしたで、ながい しゅうまつの おやすみを いっしょにすごすのです。そんなときの いちばんの おたのしみは、たき火をかこんで、あいてを こわがらせようと、かわりばんこに こわいおはなしを することです。
キツネくんが いいました。「ぼくからでいい？ ことしのおはなしは、すごいよ。きっと、こわくて おしっこもらしちゃうよ！」
「あはは。きょねんの はかばのゆうれいの おはなしは いまいちだったけど、それよりは よさそうだね」と、フェレットくん。
「いいね。おもしろそう、わくわくする。まいとし、キツネくんは、ぼくらを すごく こわがらせようとするけど、こんどのは どうかな」とウサギくん。
「じゃあ、はじめるよ。あるところに 三人のこどもが いました。三人は このあたりの 森で ハイキングをしていて……」
