課題

Every summer, pregnant female sea turtles return to their natal beaches, where they themselves hatched years earlier, to lay their eggs. Only females come ashore to nest. Males almost never return to land after reaching the sea as hatchlings. Using their back flippers, the females dig nests and lay up to 100 eggs per nest. They often nest multiple times—sometimes up to ten times—in a single season. The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings, a process called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination. After about 60 days, the tiny turtles hatch together and rush toward the ocean, guided by the moonlight.

毎年夏になると、産卵を控えたメスのウミガメたちは生まれ故郷の砂浜に戻る。何年か前に自分が孵化したその場所で、卵を産むためだ。巣穴を掘りに上陸するのはメスだけで、オスのウミガメは孵化して海に入った後は、滅多に陸には戻らない。メスたちはそれぞれが後肢を使って砂に穴を掘り、そこに100個もの卵を産む。この産卵は1シーズン中に繰り返し行われ、ときに10回にも及ぶことがある。子ガメの性別は孵化する前の砂の温度で決まるのだが、この過程を「温度依存性決定」とよぶ。およそ60日後、小さな子ガメたちはいっせいに卵から孵り、月光を頼りに海をめざして勢いよくはい進む。
