課題

Every summer, pregnant female sea turtles return to their natal beaches, where they themselves hatched years earlier, to lay their eggs. Only females come ashore to nest. Males almost never return to land after reaching the sea as hatchlings. Using their back flippers, the females dig nests and lay up to 100 eggs per nest. They often nest multiple times—sometimes up to ten times—in a single season. The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings, a process called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination. After about 60 days, the tiny turtles hatch together and rush toward the ocean, guided by the moonlight.

毎年夏になると、産卵を控えたメスのウミガメが、生まれ故郷の浜へと帰ってきます。数年前に自分が孵化したその浜に、卵を産みにやってくるのです。メスだけが上陸して巣穴を作ります。オスは、孵化して海に入った後、生まれた浜に戻ってくることはまずありません。メスは、後肢で巣穴を掘り、一つの穴につき最大100個ほどの卵を産みます。ウミガメは、1シーズンに複数回巣作りすることが多く、時には10回に及ぶこともあります。子ガメの性は砂の温度で決定しますが、この過程を温度依存性決定と呼びます。産卵から約60日が経過すると、子ガメが卵から孵り、月明かりを頼りに一目散に海へと入っていきます。
