課題

Every summer, pregnant female sea turtles return to their natal beaches, where they themselves hatched years earlier, to lay their eggs. Only females come ashore to nest. Males almost never return to land after reaching the sea as hatchlings. Using their back flippers, the females dig nests and lay up to 100 eggs per nest. They often nest multiple times—sometimes up to ten times—in a single season. The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings, a process called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination. After about 60 days, the tiny turtles hatch together and rush toward the ocean, guided by the moonlight.

毎年夏になると、メスのウミガメは産卵のため何年も前に自分達が生まれた故郷の浜に戻る。戻ってくるのはメスだけだ。オスは孵化後、海に出てから故郷に戻ることは、ほぼない。メスは後ろあしを使い、産卵のための穴をほり、一回につき100個ほどの卵を産む。１シーズンで何回も（時には１０回ほど）産卵するのが普通だ。孵化時の砂の温度でオスかメスかが決まるのだが、この過程は温度依存性決定と呼ばれている。そして約60日後、子ガメが一斉に誕生し、月明かりにいざなわれ海へ向かうのだ。
