課題

Every summer, pregnant female sea turtles return to their natal beaches, where they themselves hatched years earlier, to lay their eggs. Only females come ashore to nest. Males almost never return to land after reaching the sea as hatchlings. Using their back flippers, the females dig nests and lay up to 100 eggs per nest. They often nest multiple times—sometimes up to ten times—in a single season. The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings, a process called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination. After about 60 days, the tiny turtles hatch together and rush toward the ocean, guided by the moonlight.

毎年夏になると、産卵を控えたメスのウミガメは、何年も前にふ化した故郷の浜辺に戻って卵を産みます。上陸して産卵を行うのはメスだけで、オスはふ化して海に出た後、ほとんど陸に戻ることはありません。メスは後ろ足で巣穴を掘り、1つの巣に最大100個の卵を産みます。産卵期に何度も卵を産むことがあり、ときには10回にも及びます。ふ化する子ガメの性別は、砂の温度によって決まります。この仕組みは「温度依存性決定」と呼ばれます。約60日後、小さな子ガメたちは一斉にふ化し、月明かりに導かれて海へと急ぎます。
