課題

Little Nancy's Pet

Little Nancy was in the garden filling in a hole when her neighbor peered over the fence. Interested in what the little girl was up to, he politely asked, "What are you up to there, Nancy?"
"My goldfish died," replied Nancy tearfully, without looking up, "and I've just buried him."

The neighbor was concerned, "That's an awfully big hole for a goldfish, isn't it?"

Nancy patted down the last heap of earth and then replied, "That's because he's inside your stupid cat."

ナンシーちゃんのペット

　幼いナンシーが庭で穴を埋めているところを、隣の家の男がフェンス越しにのぞいていた。あんな小さな女の子が何をしているんだろうと思って、男はていねいに尋ねた。「そこで何をしているのかな、ナンシー」
「わたしの金魚が死んじゃったの」ナンシーは顔を上げずに、泣きながら言った。「だから金魚のお墓を作ったの」

　男は不思議に思った。「金魚のお墓にしては、ものすごく大きな穴だね」

　ナンシーは最後にかぶせた土をならしてから答えた。「だって金魚は、おじさんちのばかネコのおなかの中にいるんだもん」
