He stuck his hand into the water, soaping up a glass. We tended to have our most intense
interactions around the kitchen sink.
“What did you think of Aaron's girlfriend?”
My father shook his head, wearily. “What was she doing here, again?”
“She came by with a gift for him.”
“Oh, really,” he said, moving a couple of glasses onto the dish rack.
“What was it?”
“An Italian picture frame. With a picture of her in it.”
“And you didn't tell her she should have kept it for herself?”

パパは水のなかに手をつっこんで、洗剤でグラスを洗った。一番わたしたちの会話がはずむのは、どうやら台所のシンクのまえなのだ。
「アーロンの彼女どう思った？」
パパはやれやれというふうに首をふった。「今度はまたなんの用で来たんだ？」
「アーロンにプレゼントだって」
「なるほどね」パパはそう言って、グラスを二つ水切り用のラックにのせた。
「プレゼントはなんだった？」
「イタリア製のフォトフレーム。なかに彼女の写真入り」
「で、忠告しなかったのかい、それは自分で持ってたほうがいいよって？」
