He stuck his hand into the water, soaping up a glass. We tended to have our most intense
interactions around the kitchen sink.
“What did you think of Aaron's girlfriend?”
My father shook his head, wearily. “What was she doing here, again?”
“She came by with a gift for him.”
“Oh, really,” he said, moving a couple of glasses onto the dish rack.
“What was it?”
“An Italian picture frame. With a picture of her in it.”
“And you didn't tell her she should have kept it for herself?”

父さんは水のなかに手をつっこんで、グラスを洗った。あたしたちはたいていキッチンの流しのそばで、大事なことをいろいろ話しあう。
「アーロンの彼女のこと、どう思った？」
やれやれ、と父さんは首をふった。「今度は何をしにきたんだい」
「アーロンにプレゼント持ってきたの」
「へえ、そう」そう言うと、グラスをいくつか水切りかごに置いた。
「何だった？」
「イタリア製の写真立て。自分の写真入りでね」
「自分の家で飾っておけば、ってあの子に言ってやらなかったのかい」
