He stuck his hand into the water, soaping up a glass. We tended to have our most intense
interactions around the kitchen sink.
“What did you think of Aaron's girlfriend?”
My father shook his head, wearily. “What was she doing here, again?”
“She came by with a gift for him.”
“Oh, really,” he said, moving a couple of glasses onto the dish rack.
“What was it?”
“An Italian picture frame. With a picture of her in it.”
“And you didn't tell her she should have kept it for herself?”

父さんは流しに手を突っ込んでグラスを洗剤で洗った。いちばん打ち解けて親子の会話ができるのはもっぱら台所で洗い物をしながらだった。
「アーロンの彼女のこと、どう思った？」
父さんはうんざりしたように首を横に振った。「あの娘はここでまた何をしていたんだ？」
「アーロンにプレゼントを渡しに寄ったんだよ」
「ああ、そうか」父さんはグラスを次々と食器かごに移しながらきいた。
「プレゼントは何だった？」
「イタリア製の写真立て。自分の写真入りの、ね」
「自分で持っとけと言ってやればよかったのに」
