He stuck his hand into the water, soaping up a glass. We tended to have our most intense
interactions around the kitchen sink.
“What did you think of Aaron's girlfriend?”
My father shook his head, wearily. “What was she doing here, again?”
“She came by with a gift for him.”
“Oh, really,” he said, moving a couple of glasses onto the dish rack.
“What was it?”
“An Italian picture frame. With a picture of her in it.”
“And you didn't tell her she should have kept it for herself?”

彼は水に手を入れると、洗剤を使ってグラスを洗いはじめた。わたしたちが熱く語り合うのは、たいていキッチンの流しのそばだった。
「アーロンの彼女のこと、どう思った？」
父さんは、うんざりといった様子で、首を横にふった。「今度はなにをしに来たんだい？」
「アーロンに、プレゼントを渡しに来たのよ」
「ふーん、そうか。なにを持ってきたんだ？」父さんは、グラスをふたつ、水切りかごにのせながらいった。
「イタリア製の写真立て。自分の写真が入れてあったわ」
