Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

誰かを笑わせるのに、面白い顔以上のものがあるでしょうか。日本には、「福笑い」という顔を作る遊びがあります。これはお正月の伝統的な遊びの一つですが、実際の顔を使うわけではありません。代わりに顔の形をかたどった大きめのボードを使います。その上に、プレイヤーが目隠しをした状態で顔のパーツを置いていくのです。顔は、日本神話に登場するおかめという女性をモチーフにしています。おかめは、幸運と慈愛の象徴です。こうして出来上がった顔を一つ一つ眺めては、その可笑しさに皆で笑いに興じます。「福笑い」という言葉には「幸運をもたらす笑い」という意味があります。笑いこそ、まさにこの遊びがもたらすものです。
