福笑い翻訳コンテスト

課題

Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

おかしな顔ほど人々を笑わせるものはありません。日本ではお正月休みに「福笑い」という、おもしろい顔を作る伝統的な遊びが行なわれます。この遊びは、実際の顔で行なうのではありません。平面に描かれた大きな頭に、参加者が目隠しをした状態で顔のパーツを置いていくのです。福笑いの顔は、日本神話に登場する幸運と慈悲の女神「おかめ」です。すべてのパーツが置かれると、その滑稽な表情を見てみんなが笑います。「福笑い」は文字通り「福を呼ぶ笑い」を意味し、それはまさにこの遊びでもたらされるものなのです。
