A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”
訳文
とある若い女性が、職場から自宅に向かって暗い夜道を歩いていました。道路工事が行われているせいで、真っ暗な墓地を通る道を進まなければなりませんでした。墓地の入り口が近づくにつれ、彼女は恐怖に勝てず、震えだしてしまいました。すると突然、警察官が道を歩いてくるではありませんか。彼女はその警察官に向かって走り、家まで送ってくれるよう頼みました。彼が承知したので一緒に墓地を歩いていると、彼女は震えだしました。
「どうして震えているのですか？」
と、警察官が尋ねました。
「怖いんです。私、お化けがどうしようもなく怖いんです。」
そう女性が答えると、警察官は驚いて笑いながら言いました。
「私たちのどこが怖いんだい？」
