夏の怪談翻訳コンテスト

課題

A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”

或る暗〜い夜のこと、仕事帰りの若い女性が一人、歩いて家路についておりました。道は工事中で、彼女は、暗い墓場を抜ける小道を通らないといけなくなってしまったのです。墓場の入り口が近づくにつれ、彼女は怖さに耐えられず、ブルブル震えだしてしまいました。そこに思いがけず、一人の警官が歩いているのが見えたのです。彼女は警官に駆け寄り、家まで付き添ってくれるようお願いしたところ、彼は引き受けてくれました。二人が墓場を通り抜けていると、女性はガタガタ震え始めました。
「どうして震えているんですか？」と警官は尋ねました。
「恐ろしくって」彼女は答えました。「私、死んだ人がものすごく怖いんです」
警官はびっくりして、そして笑って尋ねたのです、「なんで僕たちが怖いんですか？」
