A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”

仕事帰りの若い女が暗い夜道を歩いていた。道路工事のせいで、家に帰るには暗い墓地を通り抜けなければならない。墓地の門に近づくにつれ、彼女はあまりの恐怖に震えだした。すると突然、警官が道を歩いているのが見えた。彼女は警官に駆け寄り、家まで送ってくれるように頼んだ。承諾した警官と共に墓地を抜けながら、彼女はガタガタと震えだした。「なぜ震えているの？」警官が聞いた。「ぞっとするんです。」彼女が答えた。「ものすごく死人が怖くて。」警官は驚いて笑いながら聞いた。「なぜ僕らが怖いんだい？」
