A young woman was walking home from work on a dark night. Due to road construction, she needed to take a path through a darkened cemetery. As she approached the cemetery gates, she was overcome by fear and began to shake. Suddenly, she saw a policeman walking along the road. She ran to him and asked for an escort home. He agreed and as they passed through the cemetery, the woman began trembling.
“Why are you shaking?” asked the policeman.
“It is horrible,” replied the woman. “I am terribly afraid of the dead.”
The policeman was surprised and asked with a laugh, “Why be afraid of us?”
訳文
ある闇の深い夜、仕事を終えた若い女性が家路についていた。あいにく、いつもの道が工事中だったため、彼女は真っ暗な墓地を通り抜けるしかなかった。墓地の入口に近づくにつれ、彼女は不安にかられ、おびえだした。すると不意に、道沿いを歩く警官が見えた。彼女は彼に駆け寄り、家まで送ってほしいと頼んだ。彼は求めに応じた。そして、二人が墓地を通り抜けると程なく、彼女はぶるぶると震え出した。
「なぜ震えているんだい？」警官は尋ねた。
「背筋がぞっとするの」、と彼女は答えた。「わたし、死んだ人がものすごく怖い。」
すると警官は驚き、笑いながら彼女に聞いた。「どうして僕たちが怖いんだい？」
