課題

Every summer, pregnant female sea turtles return to their natal beaches, where they themselves hatched years earlier, to lay their eggs. Only females come ashore to nest. Males almost never return to land after reaching the sea as hatchlings. Using their back flippers, the females dig nests and lay up to 100 eggs per nest. They often nest multiple times—sometimes up to ten times—in a single season. The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings, a process called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination. After about 60 days, the tiny turtles hatch together and rush toward the ocean, guided by the moonlight.

毎年夏になると、繁殖期のメスは産卵のため、かつて自分が孵化した砂浜に戻ってきます。巣作りをするメスだけが、浜にやって来るのです。オスは孵化後に海へ出ると、陸上に戻ることはほぼありません。メスは後ろ足を使って穴を掘り、1つの巣穴に100個ほどの卵を産みます。1シーズンに何度も産卵することも多く、時に10回にも及び産卵することがあります。子ガメの性別は砂の温度により決定される特徴があり、温度依存型性決定と呼ばれています。約60日後、一斉に卵から孵った小さな子ガメ達は、月の光に導かれ、一気に海を目指します。
