課題

Every summer, pregnant female sea turtles return to their natal beaches, where they themselves hatched years earlier, to lay their eggs. Only females come ashore to nest. Males almost never return to land after reaching the sea as hatchlings. Using their back flippers, the females dig nests and lay up to 100 eggs per nest. They often nest multiple times—sometimes up to ten times—in a single season. The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings, a process called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination. After about 60 days, the tiny turtles hatch together and rush toward the ocean, guided by the moonlight.

毎年夏になると、母ガメが産卵をしに故郷の浜辺に戻って来る。何年も前に自分たちが孵化した場所だ。巣を作るために陸へ上がって来るのはメスだけ。オスは孵化幼体のときに海にたどり着いた後、陸へ戻って来ることはほとんどない。母ガメは後ろ足を使って巣穴を堀り、巣穴1つあたり最多100個の卵を産む。ひと夏のうちに何回も巣作りすることも多く、ときには10回にも及ぶ。砂浜の温度で孵化幼体の性が決まるのだが、この現象を温度依存性決定という。60日ほど経つと小さなカメが一斉に孵化し、月光をたよりに大海原へと急ぐ。
