Every summer, pregnant female sea turtles return to their natal beaches, where they themselves hatched years earlier, to lay their eggs. Only females come ashore to nest. Males almost never return to land after reaching the sea as hatchlings. Using their back flippers, the females dig nests and lay up to 100 eggs per nest. They often nest multiple times—sometimes up to ten times—in a single season. The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings, a process called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination. After about 60 days, the tiny turtles hatch together and rush toward the ocean, guided by the moonlight.

毎年夏になると、腹に卵を抱えたウミガメのメスは、自らの生まれ故郷である浜辺に戻ってきて産卵する。産卵のために上陸するのはメスだけで、オスは卵からかえって一度海に出ると、ほとんど陸に戻ることはない。メスは後ろ足を使って砂浜に穴を掘り、1つの巣に最大100個の卵を産み落とす。産卵は1シーズンに何度も行われることが多く、時には10回近くにも及ぶことがある。ふ化した子ガメの性別は砂の温度によって決まるが、この仕組みを「温度依存性決定」と言う。約60日後、小さな子ガメたちは一斉に卵からかえり、月明かりを頼りに海へと駆け出していく。
