Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

滑稽な顔ほど人を笑わせるものはない。日本には、正月休みにやる昔ながらの「福笑い」という顔を作る遊びがある。この遊びには、本物の人間の顔は使わない。代わりに、大きく平らな顔型の上に、目隠しをしたまま顔のパーツを並べていく。顔型は、幸運と好意を引き寄せるという、日本の神話に登場する女神「おかめ」のものだ。一人ずつ挑戦しては、出来上がったおかしな顔を見て皆で笑う。「福笑い」という文字は「幸運な笑い」を意味するが、この遊びをすると正にその通り、笑いが起こるのだ。
