Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

おもしろい顔ほど笑いを誘うものはありません。日本の「福笑い」は、お正月に楽しむ伝統的な顔作りの遊びです。これは自分の顔を使うような遊びではありません。そうではなく、目隠しをしたまま大きな平面の輪郭の上に顔のパーツを配置していきます。この遊びで使われるのは日本の神話に登場する女神「おかめ」の顔で、幸運と優しさをもたらすとされています。それぞれのプレーヤーが顔を作り終えると、皆でそれを見てなんとおもしろい顔だと笑います。「福笑い」は文字通り『福をもたらす笑い』という意味で、この遊びをするとまさに笑いが生まれるのです。
