Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

面白い顔ほど人を笑わせるものはありません。「福笑い」は顔を作る日本の伝統的な遊びで、お正月休みに行われます。しかし、実際の顔を使って遊ぶのではありません。正しくは、目隠しをされた人が、ばらばらになった顔のパーツを大きくて平らな顔の上で正しい位置に置くという遊びです。顔は、幸運と優しさをもたらす日本神話の女神である「おかめ」の顔を使用します。一人が顔を完成させると、出来上がったその滑稽な顔を見て皆が笑います。福笑いはその名の通り「福をもたらす笑い」を意味し、福笑いをするとまさに笑いが起きるのです。
