Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.
訳文
たいていの人は、変な顔を見ると笑ってしまいます。日本には、「福笑い」という、正月に遊ばれる伝統的な顔作りの遊びがあります。実際に自分の顔を使って遊ぶわけではありません。自分の顔には目隠しをして、平らに描かれた大きな顔に顔の部品を並べていく遊びです。このとき、福と好意を招くと言われる、日本神話の女神「おかめ」の顔を使います。並べ終えたら、できあがった変な顔を見てみんなで笑います。「福笑い」は文字通り「縁起のいい笑い」のことで、この遊びをすると、誰でも笑ってしまいます。
