Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

誰でも滑稽な顔をみると、思わず笑ってしまいますよね。日本には、昔から親しまれている福笑いという顔の表情をつくる遊びがあり、お正月休みになるとみんなでこのゲームに興じて笑いあいます。といっても、実際の顔で表情をつくるのではありません。目隠しされたプレイヤーが、大きな紙の上に描かれた顔の輪郭の上に、顔の各パーツを並べていくのです。ゲームに使われるのは、幸福と思いやりの心を司る、日本神話に出てくる女神オカメの顔です。各プレイヤーが顔を完成させるごとに、その出来上がった滑稽な顔を見てみんなで笑いあうのです。福笑いは文字通り「幸福な笑い」を表していて、このゲームの参加者はみな一様に笑いに包まれるのです。
