Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

おかしな顔ほど人を笑わせるものはない。福笑いは顔を作り上げる日本の伝統的なゲームで、正月に行われる。このゲームは実際の顔を使うのではない。そうではなく、目隠しをして大きな何もない平らな顔の上に顔のパーツを載せて、作り上げていくのである。顔は日本神話の女神で、幸運と思いやりをもたらすおかめの顔である。顔が出来上がるたびに、顔のおかしさにみなが笑い出す。福笑いは文字どおり「縁起のよい笑い」を意味する。このゲームで遊べば、その名のとおり笑いが起こるのである。
