課題

Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

おかしな顔ほど人を笑わせるものはありません。日本では、お正月休みの期間中、顔を作って遊ぶ「福笑い」という伝統的な遊びがあります。この遊びは本当に自分の顔を使うわけではありません。そうではなく、目隠しをした状態で、大きな平たい顔の上に、顔の各パーツを組み合わせていこうとするのです。使われる顔は日本の神話に登場する女神「おかめ」の顔で、幸運と優しさをもたらしてくれると言われています。一人一人の顔作りが終わると、そのあまりにおかしな顔立ちを見て誰もが笑ってしまうのです。「福笑い」は文字通り「幸福の笑い」という意味ですが、その笑いこそまさにこの遊びをしている時起きているのです。
