Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

面白い顔ほど人を笑わせるものはない。日本には昔から「福笑い」という顔を作る遊びがあり、新年を祝う時季に人々に愉しまれている。といっても、本物の顔を使ってやるのではない。代わりに挑戦者は目隠しをして、顔のパーツを大きくてのっぺりとした輪郭の上に並べていくのだ。この遊びに使われる顔は、幸せや思いやりの心を運ぶとされる日本神話の女神、「おかめ」のもの。そして出来上がった面白い顔を見ては、皆で笑い合う。福笑いとは文字通り「幸せな笑い」という意味で、まさに人々にそんな福を招く遊びなのである。
