Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

滑稽な顔ほど人を笑わせるものはありません。日本には、顔を作って楽しむ「福笑い」というお正月伝統の遊びがあります。実際に顔を使って楽しむものではなく、のっぺりした大きな顔の上に、顔の各パーツを目隠ししながら置いていく遊びです。福笑いに使われる顔は、日本神話に登場し、幸運と愛をもたらす女神「おかめ」の顔。全員が顔のパーツを置き終えると、その出来上がった滑稽な顔の出来にどっと笑いの渦が巻き起こります。福笑いは「幸福が笑う」ことを意味し、福笑いをすれば、まさに文字通り笑いが起こるのです。
