Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

面白い顔を見ると誰もが笑ってしまいます。「福笑い」とは日本でお正月の期間に楽しまれている、顔を作る伝統的な遊びです。本物の顔を用いて遊ぶのではありません。目隠しをした状態で、顔の輪郭を大きく描いた紙の上に顔の各パーツを置いていきます。その顔は、幸運と愛情をもたらすとされる、日本神話に登場する女神の「おかめ」の顔になっています。参加者がそれぞれ自分の順番を終えると、その度に出来上がった面白い顔を見て全員で笑うのです。「福笑い」は文字通り「幸運をもたらす笑い」を意味していて、この遊びをしていると本当に笑いが起こるのです。
