Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.
訳文
おかしな顔というものは、何より人の笑いを誘うものです。日本には、「福笑い」といって、顔の表情を作る伝統的な遊びがあり、新年の休日に楽しまれます。この遊びでは、実在する顔を使うわけではなく、大きな平面に描いた顔の輪郭に、目隠しをして、目、鼻、口などの部品を並べるのです。それは「おかめ」という日本神話に登場する女神の顔で、この神は幸せと安らぎをもたらすとされています。ひとりずつ顔を完成させるたびに、おかしな顔の出来映えを見て、皆で笑います。福笑いの字義は、「福をもたらす笑い」ですが、この遊びをすれば文字通り大笑いすることになります。
