Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.

誰でもユーモアのある顔を見ると笑わずにはいられない。日本では、お正月休みに顔を作って遊ぶ“福笑い”という伝統的なゲームがある。このゲームは自分自身の顔で遊ぶものではなく、参加者は目隠しをした状態で大きな顔の上に目や鼻、口を置いて顔を作っていく。その大きな顔は日本の神話に出てくる女神“おかめ”であり幸運と人情をもたらすと言われる。ゲームが終わると、出来上がったおかしな顔を見て、みんなで笑い合う。“福笑い”は、まさに“福を呼ぶ笑い”であり、このゲームをすると自然と笑いが起こるのである。
