Nothing makes people laugh more than a funny face. In Japan, fukuwarai is a traditional face making game which is played during the New Year’s holiday time. This game is not about using your actual face. Rather, people try to put together the pieces of a face onto a large flat head while blindfolded. The face is that of the Japanese mythical goddess Okame, the bringer of luck and kindness. After each player is done, everyone laughs at how funny the face looks. Fukuwarai literally means "lucky laugh" and laughing is exactly what happens when people play this game.
訳文
おかしな顔ほど人を笑わせるものはない。日本では、昔から正月に「福笑い」という顔を作る遊びをする。実際の顔で遊ぶのではない。描かれた大きな顔の上に、目かくしをして顔のパーツを並べていくのだ。その顔は、幸運と愛をもたらす日本神話の女神「おかめ」のものだ。各々が並べ終えた後、出来上がったおかしな顔を皆で笑う。「福笑い」とは、文字通り「幸福の笑い」という意味だが、この遊びで本当に笑いが起こるのだ。
